Douay-Rheims

The Douay-Rheims is the Bible that is being used on this site for all scripture. There are different editions of the Douay-Rheims. The original Douay-Rheims was completed in 1610 with the completion of the Douay Old Testament. The Rheims New Testament was completed in 1582. The Douay-Rheims was revised by Bishop Dr. Richard Challoner from 1749-1752. It was again revised by Fr. George Leo Haydock and completed in 1811. The Haydock also includes commentary. The Haydock was used when President John F. Kennedy was sworn in as President in 1961, which marked 150 anniversary of this edition. The Douay-Rheims is a word for word translation of the Latin Vulgate (Sixtus and Clementine editions).  The Latin Vulgate itself is the only Bible to be declared err free in all doctornal matters by the Council of Trent. The Vulgate that the Douay-Rheims is taken from was originally written by St. Jerome and completed in 400 A.D.
