Blessed Pope John XXIII

Pope John XXII was born Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli in 1881. He is best remembered for convoking the Vatican II council in 1962. This council concluded in 1965 under his successor Pope Paul VI. He was beatified in September 2000 by Pope John Paul The Great (John Paul II) Roncalli became Pope in 1958 upon the death of Pope Pius XII. It was the first time in over 500 years that we had a Pope John.  However John XXIII’s reign as Pope would be short lived as he was diagnosed with stomach cancer and passed away in 1963.
